<p>Growing up as a Vietnamese American in a family deeply affected by disability, I had a front-row seat to the struggles my father faced. Watching how society treated him because of his disabilities shaped my understanding of the deep inequalities in the healthcare system, particularly for people like us—immigrants, and working-class, who are often overlooked. These early experiences weren’t just about seeing my father deal with his disabilities; they were about witnessing a system that consistently failed him and our family, and eventually, how that same system failed me.</p><p>My father’s journey through the healthcare system was marked by barriers that went far beyond medical care. Whether it was language barriers, a lack of cultural competence from healthcare professionals, or the absence of adequate resources, our family had to navigate a system that wasn’t designed with us in mind. I saw firsthand how racism and ableism intertwined, creating a toxic cycle where my father’s disability was not just a medical issue but a social one—something that affected every facet of his life, including how others perceived him and how much dignity he was afforded.</p><p>These experiences profoundly influenced my passion for advocacy and my drive to address health equity and disparities. As I grew older, I faced my own health battles, including a late glaucoma diagnosis that left me partially blind. My vision issues could have been addressed much sooner if I had access to proper healthcare, resources, and awareness. But like my father, I was a victim of a healthcare system that too often overlooks low-income, immigrant communities. There’s an unspoken truth in many of these communities: you only go to the doctor when something is seriously wrong because affording routine care isn’t an option, where language barriers, lack of cultural competence, and health insurance are difficult to navigate around. In addition, a cultural stigma of shame and guilt for disability and health added to this layer of challenges.&nbsp; And by the time my glaucoma was diagnosed, it was too late to fully save my vision.</p><h3>The Intersection of Health Disparities, Neurodiversity, and Mental Health</h3><p>Living with glaucoma and being partially blind has impacted my mental health in ways I hadn’t anticipated. The inaccessibility of the world around me, combined with the barriers to quality healthcare, created feelings of isolation and frustration. I found myself navigating a dual struggle—dealing with the physical limitations of my condition while also facing the mental toll of living in a society that isn’t designed for people like me.</p><p>But it didn’t stop there. In my late 20s, I was identified with both autism and ADHD, years after the signs were apparent. My late identification only compounded the challenges I faced. Professionals were often ill-equipped to understand the complexities of neurodivergence, particularly when layered with cultural and racial nuances. The lack of understanding wasn’t just frustrating—it was disempowering. I was left to fend for myself in a system that barely understood what autism looked like in adults, let alone adults of color. The very healthcare system that failed my father also failed me, contributing to years of internalized shame and confusion over why I struggled to meet societal expectations.</p><p>There is a distinct gap in how neurodiversity, mental health, and disability are handled within healthcare, particularly for marginalized groups. The intersections of race, neurodivergence, and disability make accessing appropriate care even more complex. Often, professionals aren’t trained to recognize how autism and ADHD manifest differently across cultures, especially for those who don’t fit the typical white, male-centric model of diagnosis.</p><h3><strong>Cultural Stigma and Lack of Support</strong></h3><p>As a person with multiple disabilities—autism, ADHD, and glaucoma—I often felt caught between worlds. The stigma of disability within the AAPI community and the systemic racism in the healthcare system created a perfect storm that contributed to both my late diagnoses and my ongoing mental health challenges. In many Asian cultures, mental health issues and disabilities are often hidden or dismissed, further isolating individuals who need support. The cultural expectation to “save face” and not show weakness created a deep sense of shame that made it harder for me to seek help when I needed it most.</p><p>The pressure to uphold the “model minority” myth compounded my feelings of inadequacy. I was supposed to be self-sufficient, resilient, and successful, but instead, I felt like I was constantly falling short. This societal expectation also meant years of silently suffering without having any explanation of why that was. I was left without the resources or support necessary to fully understand my neurodivergent brain and manage my disabilities.</p><h3><strong>The Role of Health Disparities</strong></h3><p>The truth is, that health disparities go beyond just the lack of access to healthcare; they also involve the quality of care received. In low-income communities like the one I grew up in, we didn’t have access to top-tier doctors or mental health professionals who understood the complexities of disability and neurodiversity. The healthcare we received was often rushed, impersonal, and riddled with miscommunication due to language barriers and cultural insensitivity. In my case, these factors contributed to my late glaucoma diagnosis, my late autism and ADHD diagnoses, and a lack of proper mental health care. It wasn’t just about physical health; the system’s failure to provide culturally competent and neuroaffirming care left me feeling isolated and unsupported.</p><h3><strong>What We Need for Change</strong></h3><p>My experiences watching my father navigate a broken system, and later doing so myself, have fueled my passion for advocating for health equity, neurodiversity inclusion, and support for the disabled. We need a healthcare system that sees the full humanity of every individual, not just their symptoms. And to get there, we must address several key issues:</p><ul><li><strong>Culturally Competent Care: </strong>Healthcare professionals need to be trained not just in the technical aspects of medicine but also in the cultural and neurodivergent contexts that shape how patients experience illness, disability, and mental health. For families like mine, who come from immigrant backgrounds, this understanding is crucial.</li><li><strong>Access to Quality Care in Low-Income Communities: </strong>The disparity in healthcare resources between affluent and low-income communities is staggering. There need to be more targeted efforts to bring quality care to marginalized communities, so people aren’t left suffering until it’s too late, as I was with my glaucoma and autism diagnoses.</li><li><strong>Comprehensive Mental Health and Neurodiversity Support:</strong> Mental health and neurodivergence cannot be separated from physical health. We need a healthcare system that recognizes the psychological toll of living with disabilities and neurodivergent conditions, particularly for individuals from marginalized backgrounds. This means providing accessible, affordable, and culturally informed mental health services.</li><li><strong>Addressing Systemic Racism in Healthcare:</strong> The healthcare system must reckon with its role in perpetuating racial inequalities. BIPOC individuals, especially those who are neurodivergent or disabled, face unique challenges that go beyond individual health concerns; these challenges are rooted in the structural inequalities that make it harder for us to access care in the first place.</li></ul><h3><strong>A Call to Action</strong></h3><p>The healthcare system has a long way to go in addressing the needs of people like my father and me—people who exist at the intersection of race, disability, and economic disadvantage. But change is possible. As someone who has experienced these inequities firsthand, I am committed to advocating for a healthcare system that is more inclusive, equitable, and humane.</p><p><strong>To the BIPOC youth and neurodivergent individuals reading this:</strong> Your experiences matter. Your voice matters. Don’t be afraid to demand better, to seek help, and to advocate for the care and support you deserve. We must push for a healthcare system that values all of us, no matter where we come from or what we face. Together, we can build a world that acknowledges the full spectrum of human diversity—racial, cultural, and neurodivergent—and ensures that everyone receives the care they deserve.</p><p><br>&nbsp;</p>
